In accordance with the “Regulations for the Examination in the Teacher Training Certificate Program (Extension Examination) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz”, the following six modules must be successfully completed in the subject of Social Studies as part of the extension examination:

  • Fundamentals of political science and its neighboring disciplines
  • Democracy and society in Germany
  • Comparison of political systems or political theory (one of the two must be chosen)
  • Social studies didactics
  • Politics and civic education
  • Cross-cutting problems in the political context

The module examinations in the two modules “Fundamentals of Political Science and its neighboring disciplines” and “Didactics of Social Studies” are to be completed in the form of written examinations, the module examinations in the other four modules in the form of academic term papers.

When attending Module 10 “Politics and civic education” and Module 12 “Cross-sectional problems in the political context”, knowledge from Modules 1-5 is assumed. We strongly recommend that you first complete the modules from the B.Ed. in Social Studies before taking the modules from the M.Ed.
