For all module examinations(including all re-sit examinations!), registration via JOGU-StINe during the registration phase is mandatory. Only then can the module examination be taken in the semester in which you have logged in.
You can view the registration deadlines under Deadlines and Dates. Please note that the registration deadlines in other subjects may differ from this date. Please inquire about this at the examination office of your other subject; exceptions to the central registration deadlines for module examinations can be found on the central JOGU-StINe page.
We communicate all deadlines and dates on a separate page, which you can always find in the footer of the Institute’s website.
The module examination consists of two parts: one part of the examination relates to “Introduction to Political Science” (weighting: one third) and can be taken directly after the lecture in the first semester; the other part of the examination relates to “Methods of Empirical Political Research/Statistics” (weighting: two thirds) and is usually taken after the second semester. Both partial examinations must be passed.
In two of the five basic modules you will write a term paper as a module examination, in the other three basic modules you will write a written examination. You are free to choose in which basic modules you write a term paper and in which you write a written examination; the only binding requirement is that two of the five basic module examinations must be completed as a term paper and three as a written examination. The following registration rules apply so that your registration can be clearly assigned to the examination type written examination or term paper:
Examination option: written exam
If you decide to take a written exam as a module examination, it is sufficient to register for the module examination via JOGU-StINe.
The examination form “written exam” is usually offered in the basic modules every semester and must be taken after attending the two lectures (introduction and thematic lecture).
Contents
The exams for the basic modules each cover the material from the module’s two lectures (introductory lecture and thematic lecture). The introductory lectures are largely standardized, meaning they essentially repeat the same content. The content of the thematic lectures varies more. To offer students greater flexibility, the exam for the basic modules is generally based on a) the introductory lecture, b) the current thematic lecture, and c) the thematic lecture from the previous year, with students having to choose between b) and c) during the exam. This allows students to refer to the earlier thematic lecture in the exam. In case of doubt, please always contact the respective module coordinator directly to clarify which lectures the module exam is based on.
Examination option: Term paper
If you decide to write a term paper as a module examination, please register for the module examination via JOGU-StINe. In addition, please contact the lecturer who led the (basic) seminar in which you would like to write a term paper to discuss the topic.
Students who wish to complete a basic module with a term paper generally register for the module examination in the semester in which they attend the seminar belonging to the module, even if this is not the last semester of the module and the thematic lecture belonging to the module has not yet been attended (= early module examination). Corresponding seminars are offered for all basic modules in each semester. This means that a corresponding module examination with the examination form “term paper” is also offered in each semester.
Supervision/Assessment of the Term Paper
The seminar for the corresponding module should be successfully completed before you take the module examination by submitting a term paper. You can also register for the module examination if the seminar has not yet been successfully completed; however, this is not recommended. The term paper is generally supervised and assessed by the instructors whose seminar the students attended. Subject to the agreement of all parties involved, supervision and assessment by another instructor of the module may also be possible in exceptional cases. At the end of the semester in which students attended a seminar, they are entitled to have their term paper supervised and assessed as the module examination by the respective seminar instructors. (According to the BA examination regulations, the assessment process should not exceed four weeks.) Students who wish to complete a basic module by submitting a term paper in a later semester than the one in which they attended the corresponding seminar are no longer entitled to be assessed by the same person who led the seminar. Should supervision of the work by the seminar leader no longer be possible, the module coordinator will decide who will take over the supervision of the work as a replacement.
Students make a binding decision on the type of examination (term paper or written examination) for a particular module when they register for the term paper or written examination for the first time. Changing the form of examination after failing an examination is not permitted. Repeat examinations must be taken in the previously chosen form (term paper or written examination).
Please remember that you must always register for the module exam via JOGU-StINe, regardless of whether you are writing an exam or a term paper, and regardless of whether it is a first or a repeat exam.
The module examination in advanced module I consists of a written examination based on the two lectures “Methods of Empirical Political Research II” and “Statistics II” with the accompanying small group/exercise “Professional Field Qualification I: Statistics II”. The seminar “Subject-specific application of research methods” is not part of the written examination. The module exam is offered every semester. You should only take part in the written exam once you have completed the two lectures “Methods of Empirical Political Research II” and “Statistics II” with the accompanying small group/exercise “Professional Qualification I: Statistics II”.
The advanced modules II and III each consist of one lecture and two seminars. The courses must be chosen from at least two of the following areas of specialization: “Political System of the Federal Republic of Germany”, “Analysis and Comparison of Political Systems”, “International Relations”, “Political Theory” and “Politics and Economics”. The total of four seminars from advanced modules II and III must cover at least two of these areas of specialization (e.g. Advanced module II two seminars in the area of “Politics and Economics” and advanced module III two seminars in the area of “Analysis and Comparison of Political Systems”; or: Advanced module II two seminars in the area of “Political Theory” and advanced module III one seminar in the area of “Analysis and Comparison of Political Systems” and one seminar in the area of “International Relations”; or: Advanced Module II one seminar on the area of “Political System of the FRG” and one seminar on the area of “Political Theory” and Advanced Module III one seminar on the area of “Analysis and Comparison of Political Systems” and one seminar on the area of “International Relations”).
The module examination in the two advanced modules II and III is completed in the form of a term paper (i.e. one term paper per advanced module). You are free to choose in which of the two seminars of a module you write the term paper. However, you must note that you must cover two different focus areas with the two assignments as module examinations in the advanced modules II and III. It is not permitted to complete both module examinations (assignments) in one content area (e.g. advanced module II module examination from the area “Political System of the Federal Republic of Germany” and advanced module III module examination also from the area “Political System of the Federal Republic of Germany”).
As a rule, you will write your term paper in the semester in which you attend the seminar you have chosen for the term paper; the seminar should be duly completed in order to take the module examination with a term paper. In order to make your course of study more flexible, you have the option, as in the basic modules, to “bring forward” the term paper, i.e. to write it in the first semester of the module. This means that you can, for example, attend a seminar in the summer semester and register for the corresponding module examination via JOGU-StINe during the module examination registration phase, even if you only attend the lecture and the second seminar scheduled in the module in the following winter semester.
Topic assignment: The topic of the term paper is agreed with the lecturer of the seminar in which the module examination is to be completed; this can also be done before the official registration for the module examination via JOGU-StINe.
Please note that term papers should still be submitted electronically or by mail. Personal delivery is NOT preferred! If you absolutely must submit your paper in person, please use the mailbox at the caretaker’s office or the student services office.
For emails, the date of receipt will be considered (so please send your email well in advance!), and for mail, the postmark will be considered.
Please enter the following 3 details in the subject line:
- – Name of the student
- – Complete name of the module(not the course!)
- – Name of the lecturer
If you are submitting several assignments: please send them separately in one e-mail each – thank you!
Please do NOT put the lecturers in Cc. The e-mail must first be processed by the student advising office and will then be forwarded directly to the lecturers.

Please note the guidelines for the formal design of term papers and use the templates for the cover sheet and for the declaration of independence. You can find all these documents in the Download Center.
If you have an extension to the deadline, please include this in the submission email.
A failed module examination can be repeated a maximum of two times. The re-sit examination must be taken in the following semester. If no registration is made in the following semester after failing, an unsuccessful attempt will be recorded. Please note this: You must log in again independently in JOGU-StINe during the examination registration phase for the first and, if applicable, the second re-sit examination.
Exception multiple-choice or single-choice exams: In the case of multiple-choice or single-choice exams that have not been passed, a supplementary oral examination takes place after three failures, which can only be evaluated as “sufficient” or “insufficient”; however, a supplementary oral examination is excluded if the candidate has not taken part in the multiple-choice exam or if the evaluation of the exam as “insufficient” is based on an attempt to cheat. The oral supplementary examination for multiple-choice or single-choice examinations should be taken by the end of the current semester, but must be taken by the end of the following semester at the latest; unlike all other re-sit examinations, registration for this is done directly at the examination office. If you are unsure whether an exam is a multiple-choice or single-choice exam as defined by the examination regulations, it is best to contact the lecturer responsible directly.
If you have not passed a module examination, you should visit the academic advisory office. If you have failed the first re-sit examination, we strongly recommend that you visit the academic advisory office, as you will then only have one more attempt. If you fail the second (or third in the case of multiple-choice examinations) re-sit examination again or fail to register for the examination on time, you have failed with no option to re-sit and will generally not be able to continue your program of study in Political Science either here in Mainz or at another university in Germany. Only if the course you have failed with no option to re-sit is not required in the Political Science degree program at another university may you have the opportunity to continue your studies there. You would then have to clarify this directly with the academic advisory office there. There is another special case: If you have failed with no option to re-sit the module examination in an advanced module in the major (subject) Political Science, but have successfully completed the module examinations in the introductory module and in the basic modules, it is possible to transfer from the major (subject) Political Science to the minor (subject) Political Science here in Mainz.
Please also note the instructions on the examination procedure on the website of the examination office of Faculty 02 – Social Sciences, Media and Sport. There you will find, for example, information on the requirements for certificates and deadlines for failing examinations. If you have missed the examination registration deadline or wish to withdraw from an examination, you must also contact the central examination office of Faculty 02.
Please note: Certificates for proof of illness must be submitted
- for module examinations in the form of written exams and oral examinations at the examination office
- for module examinations in the form of term papers at the student advising office (contact: Dagmar McCaslin). You can find the relevant form in the Download Center.

Students have the option of choosing between a written exam and an oral exam for the module examination. Both written and oral exam options are offered every semester. To retake an exam, you must register yourself again in JOGU-StINe during the exam registration period. Erfolgt keine Anmeldung im Folgesemester nach dem Nicht-Bestehen, wird ein Fehlversuch verbucht.

Please note that term papers should still be submitted electronically or by post. Personal submission is NOT preferred! If you would still like to hand in your assignment in person, please use the mailbox at the janitor’s office or the student advising office.
In the case of e-mails, the date of receipt counts (so send the e-mail in good time and not too close!), in the case of postal mail, the postmark.
| Date | Submission | Location | Remark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer Semester | 20.09. | Student advising office Political Science | If 20.9. falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the submission deadline moves to 21 or 22.9. |
| Winter Semester | 20.03. | Student advising office Political Science | If the 20.3. falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the submission deadline moves to the 21. or 22.3. |
