What do political elites and citizens mean by and expect from democracy? In her LLL, Claudia Landwehr will present results from an ongoing DFG-funded project that studies conceptions of democracy in Germany and the United States with surveys of legislators and citizens. Including: an overview of differences between citizens and elites in both countries, results of a survey experiment on institutional design preferences, and some reflections on the need for procedural consensus and contestation.
